'Exploring the structures of landscape is my starting point for creating paintings. I love to experiment with perspective and the layering of directional lines, often simplifying a subject into what I see as an assembly of elements. I strive in my paintings to strike a balance between painting a particular subject and trying not to focus my attention on the most obvious elements.'
Mary is a Scottish contemporary artist with a confident free and expressive handling of paint. With an ability to celebrate life, colour and energy from observing the landscape or domestic still life. Painting primarily in oil, but also occasionally mixed media, she comfortably balances subject and abstraction.
Based on the peninsula Ardmore Point in the west of Scotland and with a second off grid lochside studio her appreciation of skies and the rhythm of water to shoreline is a familiar, much loved, subject.
Born in Edinburgh in 1977 she studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, graduating in 2000, she then worked in commercial design for a number of years. Since becoming a full time artist Mary has gathered significant following, exhibited widely and has private collections in Britain, Germany, France, New Zealand, Canada and Spain.
